Dear Friend of
Wisdom,
Please find attached the essay topics for
he Finnish Philosophical Essay Event, dedicated to the celebration of the
UNESCO Philosophy Day,
November 19th 2009.
As a reminder, here are the Competition
Instructions: Organize a supervised examination lasting two hours (120
min). The essay topics are not to be given to students in advance for
study and preparation. When the examination is over, the essay questions
papers should be returned to the teacher supervising the examination.
The teacher chooses then the two best
essays and sends them to the email address of Johan Autio.
The papers should be to the point and
concise, approximately one or two pages long, and they should be written in
English or in German or French (however, not in the student s own mother
tongue).
The teachers of the participating schools
will make the preliminary selection. We expect to receive, at the maximum,
two best essays from every school. However, in exceptional cases, i.e. in
cases where you think that you have more than two exceptionally good essays
in neck and neck competition, we can tolerate one extra essay.
The written papers should be sent by e-mail
to the address above. The deadline for the papers is
November 7th 2009.
The essays should be typed, preferably in
Word format. (RTF is also fine and we tolerate Open Office, too.)
The philosophically most illuminating
papers will be awarded with materials connected to suitable philosophical
and world heritage topics. The names of the awarded participants will be
announced on November 19th, and the best essays will be published in the
internet in the following addresses:
www.unescokoulu.fi and www.feto.fi.
Therefore we are also asking the
participants for permission to publish their essay.
